From one food-filled holiday (Halloween) to the next (Thanksgiving), November provides plenty to experience — and not all of it is food-related, believe it or not. Check out our top 10 picks for family fun during the month:
Folks and Roots Festival, Nov. 3-5
Performances, artists and workshops abound at this annual classic in downtown Urbana. Family activities are part of the landscape, too, with a variety of things for kids to experience. Check out the schedule.
Featuring a live orchestra and student performers from Champaign’s Central and Centennial high schools, the popular play takes place at the Virginia Theatre in collaboration with the Champaign Park District.
St. Jude Turkey Trot Fun Run, Nov. 12
All ages are welcome for a morning of fun, fall games and physical activity. The event raises funds for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Urbana’s Market in the Square, Nov. 12
If you’re having withdrawal symptoms from not getting to experience Urbana’s Market at the Square (which ends Nov. 5), do not fear. The Market in the Square picks up the baton inside Lincoln Square.
Elf Jr., The Musical, Nov. 17-19
The Champaign Park District’s Youth Theatre program presents the popular holiday story at the historic Virginia Theatre. Click here for tickets.
Girl Scout Night at Illini Volleyball, Nov. 18
The Illini take on Maryland and Girl Scouts will be recognized during the match and receive an Illini patch. Be sure to register.
Junior League of Champaign-Urbana Festival of Trees, Nov. 19
Mrs. Claus will lead a special story time and children will have a chance to meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Click here for details and info on purchasing tickets to the brunch.
School’s Out Swim Day at the Urbana Indoor Aquatic Center, Nov. 23
From 1:30-9 p.m. the indoor pool will be open for your free-from-school students to burn off plenty of energy. There is a small admission fee (check the link for more info) but chances are the kids will be thrilled to hop in the pool on a day away from school. Also available Nov. 25.
Join the Urbana Park District for a Thanksgiving morning tradition. It’s a one-mile run/walk in Crystal Lake Park, a great excuse to spend the rest of the day replenishing the calories that you burned off in the morning!
Christie Clinic Parade of Lights, Nov. 26
Santa makes his way through downtown Champaign in this annual event that gets everyone in the holiday spirit. Pre-parade entertainment begins at 5 p.m. with the parade at 6. Be sure to check out our Parade Guide for a comprehensive list of area holiday parades.
